Whether you’ve come to witness its picturesque waterfalls, chill on its white sandy beaches, or climb Mount Rinjani, the island of Lombok will leave you longing to come back.
However, with so many different regions to explore, from the surf beaches of Kuta Lombok to the rugged foothills of Senaru, planning your Lombok accommodation might feel overwhelming.
I’ve spent multiple weeks traveling around Lombok and stayed in many different areas while exploring the island. I’ve compiled this comprehensive guide for where to stay in Lombok for every budget to help you plan your visit, from picking a region to finding a hotel.

6 Best Areas to Stay in Lombok
Lombok is located in West Nusa Tenggara province, just 20 minutes by fast boat from the Gili Islands and a quick fast-ferry or flight from Bali. Senggigi and Kuta are the main tourist hubs in Lombok where you'll find many established hotels, hostels & beach resorts.
Below are the six main areas that I recommend staying in Lombok. Each offers unique and unbeatable adventures and a different vibe, depending on your travel style.
- Kuta - A chilled-out town on the South Coast filled with epic beaches and those who love to surf.
- Senggigi - Known as the main tourist town with its turquoise white sand beaches and a large range of beautiful resorts and private villas.
- Sekotong - An off-the-beaten-path area known for its excellent snorkeling and scuba diving locations with secluded nearby small islands.
- Sembulan - A small village renowned for its breathtaking views and is the gateway to the Mount Rinjani treks.
- Senaru - Located in the north of Lombok this area is another gateway to the Rinjani Volcano trekking and offers magical waterfalls such as Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep.
- Tetebatu - A quiet village known for its picturesque rice and strawberry fields, waterfalls, and monkey forests.
Kuta is more popular these days due to its surfing opportunities. However, Senggigi is still worth a visit for a more relaxed vibe!
Why stay in Lombok? Lombok is fast becoming a popular destination for travelers seeking a more laid-back and less crowded alternative to Bali. There are so many fun things to do in Lombok, from epic waterfalls to visiting beautiful beaches, and even jumping on the famous Lombok Loop.

FAQ For Staying in Lombok
How many days is enough for Lombok?
It all depends on the activities that you plan on doing during your stay. However, I would recommend at least 7-9 days in Lombok due to the size of the island and the time it takes to get from one place to another. Also if you're planning on climbing Mount Rinjani this will take 2 days out of your itinerary.
What is the best area to stay in Lombok for first-time visitors?
For first-time visitors, I would recommend Kuta Lombok due to its vibrant atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and variety of accommodations suitable for all budgets. It's also a great spot for surfers or those looking to learn how to surf.
What is the best way to get around Lombok?
Renting a scooter is the most flexible and common way to explore Lombok. You can rent one for roughly 100,000-200,00 IDR per day, allowing you to visit remote beaches and attractions at your own pace. Make sure you have insurance before renting a scooter! For those not comfortable on two wheels, hiring a driver or using local taxis are good alternatives.
Is Lombok suitable for family vacations?
Yes, Lombok is suitable for family vacations with many family-friendly hotels and resorts, such as the Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort which offers a kids club. The island offers various activities that cater to all ages, including beach days, water sports, waterfall visits, and cultural tours.
What should I pack for a trip to Lombok?
Pack light clothing suitable for tropical weather, swimwear, a high SPF sunscreen, a reusable raincoat, insect repellent, and comfortable shoes for walking or hiking. If you plan on climbing Mount Rinjani bring a jumper as it can be cold at the top. Also, consider bringing a waterproof bag for water activities and a power adapter for Indonesia's outlets.
