6 Amazing Beaches on Comino Island in Malta

Olly Gaspar

By Olly Gaspar, full-time traveler for 7 years. I visit every place I write about & share real tips, photos, & advice from my trips.

Renowned for its crystal-clear waters and pristine sands, Comino has some of the best beaches on Malta. In fact, the beaches and hidden coves and caves are what drew me to the island on my first visit!

From the famous Blue Lagoon to the secluded Santa Marija Bay, I’ve written this quick guide to help you find the best beaches on Comino for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling!

1. Blue Lagoon - Best Beach for Swimming

  • Best Time to Visit: Get here before 10 am or after 4 pm to dodge the worst of the crowds. Peak hours are at around 1 pm when the tour boats arrive from Valletta.
  • Facilities: Food stalls sell snacks & drinks, but expect high prices. Sunbeds & umbrellas rent out fast—bring a towel if you don’t want to pay.
  • Access: Regular ferries & boat tours from Malta & Gozo (€15-€25 return). Private boat charters are the best way to enjoy it without crowds.

Comino's Blue Lagoon is Malta's most notable natural attraction. Picture iconic orange limestone cliffs dropping into some of the clearest waters you've ever seen.

Located on the smallest island, Comino, and only via a boat trip from Malta or Gozo, Blue Lagoon also has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the country! One of the best ways to get to the Blue Lagoon is to book the popular Blue Lagoon & Comino Caves trip, which is great value for money.

2. Crystal Lagoon - Best Beach for Coastal Views

  • Best Time to Visit: Late morning for the best water clarity and lighting—plus, it’s often empty before noon.
  • Facilities: No food, no rentals, no restrooms. Bring everything you need, especially water.
  • Access: 10-minute cliffside walk from Blue Lagoon or only reachable by boat. If you’re lucky, some boat tours stop here briefly for a swim.

While not as famous or well-known as the Blue Lagoon, Comino's Crystal Lagoon is arguably just as beautiful. This picturesque bay is situated on the southwest corner of the tiny island and is often missed by tourists.

Here, you'll discover a deep bay with crystal clear waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. There's also a small pebble beach at the edge of the bay, providing a great place to relax as well.

3. St Niklaw Bay, Comino - Best Beach for Relaxing

  • Best Time to Visit: Honestly, anytime—almost nobody comes here, even in peak season, making it perfect for a quiet escape.
  • Facilities: None, but the nearby hotel sometimes lets guests use their sunbeds & restaurant. Bring a picnic if you're staying a while.
  • Access: Easy 10-minute walk from Blue Lagoon. Follow the dirt path heading northeast past the old hospital ruins.

Travelers taking the ferry or boat trip to the Blue Lagoon will likely soon realize just how busy this place gets. If you're looking for a Malta beach to escape the crowds from on Comino, take the short island walking trail to St. Niklaw Bay, just a few hundred meters from the Blue Lagoon.

This bay has a small sandy beach with turquoise waters– great for swimming or snorkeling!

4. Santa Maria Bay - Best Hidden Gem Beach

  • Best Time to Visit: Mid-afternoon when the sand is warm, the water is calm, and boat tours have moved on.
  • Facilities: A tiny beach shack sells drinks & snacks, and there are some sunbeds, but don’t rely on them being available.
  • Access: 15-20 min walk from Blue Lagoon along a flat trail. Worth the effort if you want space to spread out.

Besides the Blue Lagoon, Santa Maria Bay (Santa Marija Bay) is the most popular beach on Comino Island. The waters here are quite shallow, with a long stretch of white sand lining its shores.

The color of the water in this bay is unbelievably blue, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling. Additionally, visitors will have the option of taking a short walk over to the Santa Maria Caves, which are a must-visit attraction on Comino!

5. Il-Batterija Beach – Comino’s Most Secluded Spot

  • Best Time to Visit: Midday to late afternoon—perfect for a private swim when the sun is high.
  • Facilities: None—bring water, snacks, and proper shoes if you're game enough to scale down.
  • Access: Hike to the old pig farm near the helipad, then follow the rough trail toward the cliffs near St. Mary’s Battery.

I’m calling this "Il-Batterija Beach" because, well, it doesn’t have an official name—but it sits near Saint Mary’s Gun Battery, a historic 18th-century fort on Comino’s southern coast.

Hardly anyone comes here, and for good reason: there’s no sand, no signs, and no easy way down. I hiked here in about 20 minutes from the Blue Lagoon and then scaled down some of the steeper cliffs near the natural sweeping rocky cove you see in the picture below.

I left my bag and camera up the top but took this photo with my drone. There are a few ledges perfect for sunbathing, plus some of the clearest water on Comino for snorkeling. It’s one of those places you won’t see in any other travel guides, and in my opinion a true hidden gem worthy of We Seek Travel!

6. Cominotto – The Island Escape Just Across the Lagoon

  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon—most people don’t bother swimming across until midday.
  • Facilities: None—bring everything you need, including reef shoes for the rocky shore.
  • Access: Swim (50-100 m depending on tides) from Blue Lagoon or take a kayak. Some boat tours stop here, but most don’t.

Cominotto is the tiny uninhabited island directly opposite Blue Lagoon, and if you’ve ever wondered what’s on the other side of those crystal-clear waters, here’s your answer: secluded rock pools, a small sandy cove, and some of Comino’s best snorkeling.

Most people see it but never go, which makes it one of the easiest hidden spots to escape the chaos of Blue Lagoon.
