5 Amazing Spots to Watch the Sunset on Comino

Despite its small size, Comino Island offers some of the most stunning and serene sunset views in the Maltese archipelago.

While most travelers think of epic caves and clear water lagoons, the truth is Comino is a great place to unwind an amazing day exploring the island. In the late afternoon, the crowds depart, leaving you with a secluded island to watch the sky ablaze with hues of red and gold!

After exploring every nook and cranny of Comino Island in search of the perfect sunset vantage points, I’ve compiled this list of my absolute favorites.

1. The Blue Lagoon

  • Getting there: Take a ferry from Ċirkewwa or Sliema, or join a boat tour. Walk 5 minutes uphill to the islet viewpoint above the lagoon.
  • Best for: Sunset over the turquoise water, avoiding crowds by watching from the cliffs above the lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is perhaps one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Europe. Picture crystal clear turquoise water dropping into a deep blue and edged by orange and white limestone– a landscape photographer's dream!

The Blue Lagoon and the nearby Crystal Lagoon are great places to swim but are also one of the most unique sunset locations on Comino. Either book an evening sunset cruise to the lagoon or take the short walk up to the islet view just above it and watch the sun light up the translucent waters.

2. Santa Marija Caves

  • Getting there: Paddle by kayak from Santa Marija Bay (20 mins) or take a boat trip. Hike 10 minutes from Santa Marija Beach to the top of Ġebel Comino for the best sunset view.
  • Best for: Overhead sunset view from Ġebel Comino, dramatic cliff scenery, avoiding boat crowds.

The Santa Marija caves are another highlight attraction on Comino, and quite an amazing place to photograph the Maltese sunset.

The best way to access the caves is from the sea, either by kayak or on an island boat trip. However, it's also possible to enter the cave from the land by taking the short coastal walking track from Santa Maria Beach.

Alternatively, hike up to the top of the caves to Ġebel Comino, the highest point on the island for one of the most unique sunset vantage points!

3. Saint Mary's Tower & Lantern Point

  • Getting there: 25-30 min walk from the Blue Lagoon or 15 mins from Santa Marija Bay. Follow the dirt track up to Saint Mary's Tower, then continue 5 mins south to Lantern Point.
  • Best for: Highest accessible sunset spot on Comino, clear views over Gozo, Malta, and the open sea.

On Comino's southernmost point lies the Saint Mary's Tower, a historic fortified watchtower offering outstanding views over the entire Maltese archipelago.

Travelers can reach this point by hiking up the limestone cliffs from the Blue Lagoon. If you do, make sure to walk out to Lantern Point, another top Malta sunset spot reaching far out into the Gozo Channel.

4. Santa Marija Bay

  • Getting there: Walk 15-20 mins from the main jetty or take a private boat. Best sunset spot is on the rocky outcrop at the northern end of the bay.
  • Best for: Wide-angle sunset views over the bay, quiet and relaxing atmosphere.

Santa Marija Bay, with its quiet and less crowded scene, is another excellent spot to watch the sunset on Comino.

For the best sunset views, head to the rocky outcrop on the northern side of the bay. This spot offers an elevated vantage point, providing panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding waters.

The bay's shallow waters and sandy beach provide a tranquil setting as the sun dips below the horizon. It's a great place to relax after a day of exploring the island, offering a peaceful and picturesque sunset experience.

5. Comino Chapel

  • Getting there: Walk 5 minutes inland from Santa Marija Bay along the dirt track.
  • Best for: Solitude, sunset behind the chapel, peaceful setting away from tourist spots.

For a truly unique sunset experience on Comino, head to the Comino Chapel, officially known as the Chapel of Our Lady's Return from Egypt. Nestled near Santa Marija Bay, this quaint chapel offers a serene backdrop as the sun sets.

The area around the chapel is typically quiet, especially in the evening, making it an ideal spot for those looking to enjoy a sunset in solitude. Watch the sky change colors over the small building, reflecting a blend of cultural history and natural beauty. It’s the perfect way to end a peaceful day on the island.
