Where to Stay in Guatapé: Best Hotels & Hostels

Olly Gaspar

By Olly Gaspar, full-time traveler for 7 years. I visit every place I write about & share real tips, photos, & advice from my trips.

From budget-friendly bargains to luxury boutique glamping tents. This guide features the best hotels in Guatapé to plan your stay!

Nestled in the heart of Colombia’s Antioquia region, Guatapé is a small town with a population of around 6,000. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and should be explored for at least 2 days. Most visitors miss the beauty of this region by only seeing a glimpse on a day trip from Medellín with the sole intention of climbing the Piedra del Peñol.

That’s why I’ve created this accommodation guide based on my experience and the latest reviews and accommodation deals to sum up where to stay in Guatapé for every budget.

My favorite stays are the Lake View Hostel, a top budget pick, and Bosko, with its incredible igloo-styled rooms offering views over Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir.

Viajero Guatapé Hostel & Lake Club

  • Best for: Families, solo travelers, friends & those traveling with pets!

A recently added hostel to this list for those looking for where to stay in Guatapé for a cheap dorm room, Viajero Guatapé Hostel is the best choice for you. Unlike the busy city of Medellin, this hostel is in the most relaxing and tranquil location.

This hostel provides dorm, family, and private rooms that have panoramic views over the lake, along with an on-site restaurant that serves delicious meals.

There's so much to do at the hostel, from outdoor games, the swimming pool, water sports on the lake, and even a hot tub. A free breakfast is served each morning overlooking the lake.

The best part about this hostel is that it is pet-friendly. Which is perfect for those traveling with their furry friends!

Tip: Be sure to pack mosquito repellent when staying next to the lake or participating in activities near the water, as they can be quite bad during some seasons.

Lake View Hostel

  • Best for: Backpackers & budget travellers

Located in east Guatapé, Lake View Hostel is one of the best cheap hotels in the town.

Situated right on the lake, this hostel provides a range of private and shared rooms. Guests can also dine at the on-site Thai restaurant, which we ate at many times and would highly recommend.

The main drawcard to this accommodation is its location. Situated in the heart of Guatapé, guests can explore the colorful Guatape town, eat delicious street food, or admire the Our Lady of Carmen Church.

Guests are also able to enjoy a range of activities, such as fishing, hiking, and horse riding. You can also rent a motorbike and explore the beautiful La Cazuela waterfall.

Alternative Option: Take a Day Trip from Medellín Instead

Of course, it is possible to visit Guatapé on a day trip from Medellín instead. Actually, this is the most common option since there is a convenient tour available on GetYourGuide that includes return transport, as well as:

  • Breakfast
  • Climb the giant rock (El Peñol)
  • Boat ride on Peñol-Guatapé Dam
  • Guided tour of the tiny town of Guatapé
  • Lunch

This is great value and much, much cheaper than booking a return taxi!
