Where to Stay Near Denpasar Airport: My Personal Recommendations for Smart Stopovers

Ellie Gillard

By Ellie Gillard, adventure traveler & English Literature graduate from the UK. I visit every place I write about to bring you detailed travel guides & itineraries from my trips.

Figuring out where to stay near Denpasar Airport isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds. Although Bali is an island, it’s not exactly a small island where you can just pop over to the airport in 15 minutes. And journeys in Bali aren’t always the easiest – crazy traffic, one-way roads, and peak-hour chaos can turn short distances into stressful slogs. That’s why, in some situations, choosing one of the well-located hotels near Denpasar Airport is a good shout and can make your trip smoother.

If you’ve got a late-night arrival, an early-morning flight, or a long layover – I’ve put together a guide to help you figure out where to stay. I’ll run you through all the best areas to stay in for airport access, plus round up my top hotel recommendations.

When Staying Near the Airport Makes Sense in Bali

If you’re visiting Bali, chances are you’re planning an itinerary full of verdant rice terraces, epic beaches, and beautiful ancient temples. The areas surrounding the airport aren’t exactly known for these attractions - so chances are, you’ll be spending your trip in a completely different part of the island.

Bali rice terraces

However, staying close to the airport for a night or two is a good idea in a handful of situations. Particularly if:

  • You’re landing late at night and don’t want a long taxi ride
  • You have an early morning flight - Bali traffic starts early!
  • You’re visiting Bali on a stopover
  • You’re arriving after a long-haul flight, and know you’ll be exhausted and want an easy first night
  • You’re leaving Bali, and your last stop is somewhere far from the airport, like Ubud, Amed, Sidemen, or Nusa Penida, and the Gili islands

In these cases, opting to stay near Denpasar airport might be a great shout and can reduce stress.

Denpasar Airport Location & Traffic Reality

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) sits on the narrow southern section of Bali, wedged between Kuta and Jimbaran. On a map, everything looks close, and the geographical distances really aren’t too far - but in reality, I've learned that Bali traffic can make journeys much longer than you expect.

Map of denpasar airport and surrounding areas in bali, indonesia

Here are some approximate drive times without heavy traffic:

  • Airport to Kuta: 10 to 15 minutes
  • Airport to Tuban: 5 to 10 minutes
  • Airport to Jimbaran: 15 to 20 minutes
  • Airport to Seminyak: 25 to 40 minutes

When you add rush hour, heavy rain showers, or a religious ceremony, these times can double. In Bali, it’s always good to overestimate the time it’s going to take to get somewhere, especially if you’ve got a flight to catch.

Best Areas Near Denpasar Airport

Kuta

Kuta is one of the most practical answers to where to stay near Denpasar airport. It’s close to the airport, affordable, and packed with any services you might need during your stay. The drive between Kuta and the airport usually only takes around ten minutes, so it’s a great choice if you’re arriving late or departing early in the morning.

Why Stay in KutaDownsides
It’s very close to the airportKuta is very busy and is one of the most touristy spots in Bali
There's a huge range of hotels here to suit every budget It’s definitely not Bali’s most peaceful beach!
The area has walkable streets and lots of malls, restaurants, and service providers It can be noisy at night
Easy Grab and Gojek access, making your onward travel stress-free

Kuta is ideal if you want convenience and lots of hotel choices without paying resort prices. I would never recommend staying in Kuta for your whole trip to Bali - but it makes a lot of sense for a night or two around your flight.

Tip: Check out Warung Damar if you want authentic Balinese food at very affordable prices. They also do traditional dance performances some evenings, which is a great touch. The ayam rica rica and sate ayam are particularly good!

Tuban

Tuban is a subdistrict of Kuta, and it’s sort of like downtown Kuta's quieter neighbor. It’s another great, practical choice when deciding where to stay near Denpasar airport. The airport is basically located in Tuban, and it shouldn’t take you longer than a couple of minutes to reach by car or bike.

Why Stay in TubanDownsides
It’s one of the closest areas to the terminalThere’s not really any atmosphere here
The atmosphere is a lot less hectic than central KutaCompared to Kuta, there are few dining options
Lots of the hotels located in Tuban offer airport shuttles, which are often free The vibe here doesn’t really have the ‘holiday’ feel of other areas
Even in peak traffic, you can still expect very short transfer times

Tuban is a great choice if you’re on an overnight stopover, or the purpose of your stay near Denpasar airport is simply to rest. There isn’t much  around the area, so it mainly suits people who will be utilising their hotel's facilities, rather than wanting to head out in the evening.

Tip: Kelan Beach is a nice, quiet spot where you can watch planes take off and enjoy great sunset views.

Jimbaran

Jimbaran offers a great mix when choosing where to stay near Denpasar airport. There’s a nice, but quiet, atmosphere here, and  a good selection of places to eat and drink. Plus, it’s got the perfect balance of distance - it’s close enough to the airport that the journey is easy, but far enough away that you don’t feel like you’re basically in the airport. Depending on exactly where you stay, Jimbaran is between 5 and 10 km from Ngurah Rai and can usually be reached in 10/15 minutes.

Why Stay in JimbaranDownsides
There’s a quieter, more upscale feel hereSlightly longer airport transfers than in other areas
The area has beautiful beach sunsetsJimbaran is less walkable than places like Kuta
You’ll find heaps of great seafood restaurants along the sand (my favorite is Made Bagus Cafe!)Many of the hotels here are pretty upscale, so there are fewer budget options
It has a decent ‘holiday’ kind of atmosphere, while still being close to the airport

Jimbaran is great if you want comfort and a nice atmosphere, without straying too far from the airport.

Seminyak

Seminyak often comes up when discussing hotels near Denpasar airport, but personally, I think it’s a borderline choice, and staying here is only a good idea for certain flight times. Traffic getting from Seminyak to the airport can be hellish in the mornings, so it’s not a great place to stay if you have an early morning flight. It’s around 10 km from the airport, and the journey can take anywhere between 25 to over 60 minutes.

Why Consider SeminyakDownsides
It’s got a lively atmosphere and is full of trendy cafes and great shoppingTraffic can be brutal
There’s an excellent dining scene hereTransfers during peak hours are unpredictable
You’ll find lots of stylish hotels and villas to stay in

If you’re arriving or departing in the afternoon or late evening, and want to stay somewhere not too far from the airport, Seminyak could be a great choice. However, I don’t recommend staying here if you have an early morning flight.

Below is a selection of hotels near Denpasar airport that I recommend. Each of these options is practical, comfortable, and well-located for short stays. I’ve broken my recommendations into sections based on the purpose of your stay, to help you pick the right hotel for your specific needs.

Best for Layover Stays

Hilton Garden Inn Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (Tuban)

The Hilton Garden Inn is your classic airport hotel. It's an incredibly convenient choice when deciding where to stay near Denpasar airport, as it’s located within a kilometer away, and the hotel runs free airport shuttles throughout the day.

Pros:

  • It’s modern, comfortable, and clean.
  • As an international chain, you know exactly what you’re getting and what kind of standard to expect.
  • The rooms have great soundproofing from airport noise, so it’s the perfect place to rest after a long flight.

Cons:

  • Maybe not the best if you’re planning on spending much time at the hotel, as there’s a very business-hotel kind of atmosphere
  • Not walkable to the beach

PassGo Digital Airport Hotel Bali

I actually stayed here on a recent Bali layover from Australia to China, and can confirm it’s fantastic for shorter layovers - the type where you just want to get some rest and freshen up between flights.

Pros:

  • Located inside the terminal, meaning you don’t have to worry about transfer times.
  • Great budget option
  • The beds are surprisingly comfortable and quiet
  • They have luggage lockers, so if you want to head out during your stopover, you can leave your stuff and know it’s safe.

Cons:

  • It’s very basic, and there are no facilities other than the beds and showers.

Best for Mid-Range Comfort

Novotel Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (Tuban)

This is a great hotel pick if you want to stay near Denpasar airport, but want your stay to still feel like part of your trip. The Novotel is located within walking distance from the airport, but the facilities mean it really doesn’t feel like a typical airport hotel.

Pros:

  • Great pool and spa facilities.
  • They offer free airport transfers for the short distance to the airport.
  • Rooms are comfortable and modern.
  • There’s a great breakfast here.

Cons:

  • More expensive than nearby alternatives.
  • As an internation chain hotel, it doesn’t really offer any local character or charm.

The Vira Bali Boutique Hotel & Suite (Tuban)

If you’re wondering where to stay near Denpasar airport and want a good balance between convenience getting to/from your flight, and a location that’s walkable from the beach and restaurants, this is a great choice.

Pros

  • Excellent value for money, plus there’s an airport shuttle included in the price.
  • It doesn’t have the clinical, commercial feel of some of the international chain hotels on this list.
  • Decent pool and an on-site restaurant.
  • Located in a nice area and is walkable to restaurants and amenities.

Cons

  • Some reviews mention rooms sometimes being noisy.

Best for Families

Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel (Kuta)

This is a beachfront resort, and is one of the better Bali airport hotels if you’re looking for a resort feel without long transfers. It’s only a ten-minute drive from the airport, but feels like it’s in a different world entirely.

Pros:

  • Very spacious grounds, with a large pool and gardens.
  • Offers direct beach access.
  • There’s a good range of family-friendly room and suite options.
  • The hotel is located right next to Beachwalk Mall, where you can grab food or pick up anything you might need.
  • It has a designated kids pool, playground, plus a Kids club.

Cons:

  • Not the cheapest option - expect resort pricing here.
  • The hotel is located in quite a busy area.

Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali (Kuta)

The Holiday Inn Resort Baruna is a great option for families wanting a calm night before flying or when they first arrive in Bali. It’s located just a ten-minute drive from the airport, and downtown Kuta is around a 15-minute walk away.

Pros

  • Beautiful beachfront location.
  • Ample Kids’ facilities to make use of during your stay.
  • There’s a relaxed, quiet atmosphere, so it’s a great place to relax before or after your flight.

Cons

  • Expect resort-style pricing
  • The hotel's rooms are basic, and some reviews say they’re a bit dated and worn.

Getting to and from Bali Airport Hotels - Transfers, Grab/Gojek, and Hotel Shuttles

There are a few ways to travel to and from Denpasar Airport if you’re staying at hotels nearby.

Hotel Shuttles

Many hotels near Denpasar airport offer free or low-cost airport transfers. These are so convenient, and save stress and money - so it's worth always checking if your hotel offers a transfer before booking your stay.

Grab & Gojek

Ride-hailing apps work well in Kuta, Tuban, and Jimbaran, and I recommend downloading both apps before arriving in Bali. You’ll need to walk to a designated pickup area when you land, but it’s very well signposted.

Taxis

Official airport taxis are safe and reliable, but they’re more expensive. They’re useful if you’re travelling as part of a family or group, or late at night.

FAQs: Staying Near Denpasar Airport

How far is Denpasar Airport from Kuta, Seminyak, and Jimbaran?

Kuta: 10 - 15 minutes
Jimbaran: 15 - 20 minutes
Seminyak: 25 - 60 minutes (traffic dependent)

Is it noisy to stay near the airport?

Some hotels near Denpasar airport experience aircraft noise, especially in Tuban. However, plenty of hotels have good soundproofing - it’s always worth checking reviews for mentions of noise. Resort-style properties in Jimbaran are usually quieter.

Is one night near the airport worth it in Bali?

Yes - especially for long layovers, late arrivals, or early flights. The stress of a long journey to or from the airport can really eat into your trip, so booking a night close to the airport removes this and gives you a much better travel experience.

Can you walk from the airport to the hotels?

Technically, to some hotels, yes. Just keep in mind that although your maps app might say that the hotel is walkable, in Bali sidewalks are pretty inconsistent and traffic is very heavy! Local transport for short distances is so affordable that it’s often a lot less stressful to opt for this instead.
