6 Lakes in Virginia with Cabins & Lake House Rentals

Olly Gaspar

By Olly Gaspar, full-time traveler for 7 years. I visit every place I write about & share real tips, photos, & advice from my trips.

With its rolling hills, lush forests, and stunning coastline, Virginia is the perfect place for outdoor escapes.

While Virginia is typically visited for its historical sites, the Appalachian Trail, and charming cities, it also boasts some of the most picturesque lakes in the country.

The state is divided into 10 distinct regions, each with its unique landscape and attractions. Whether you’re looking for a lake surrounded by mountains or a peaceful waterfront retreat, this guide will cover the top six lakes in Virginia with cabins and lake house rentals.

Smith Mountain Lake is my top pick. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this 20,000-acre reservoir is an epic fall destination, with cozy retreats like this Lakefront Town Home and all the best views.

Smith Mountain Lake

You can't go wrong with a lake that has over 500 miles of shoreline and is surrounded by two of Virginia's state parks. Smith Mountain Lake in the Roanoke Region of Virginia is the second largest freshwater lake in the state and has one of the most stunning views of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

Smith Mountain Lake, along the Blue Ridge Parkway down from James River, is the ultimate water enthusiast's playground, with boat rentals, a fishing pier, and water sports galore. There are plenty of hiking trails and scenic overlooks to take in the breathtaking scenery.

With long mild summers and picturesque fall foliage, Smith Mountain Lake is the perfect destination year-round, and the sunsets over the deep waters shouldn't be missed.

My favorite part about heading to Smith Mountain Lake is all of the lake house rentals with waterfront views near the mountains. You can see the lake out one window, and out another, you have even better views of the mountains.

Lake Anna

Lake Anna is an excellent destination for a summer getaway in Virginia. Located just 72 miles south of Washington D.C., this man-made lake covers over 13,000 acres and brings together the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure for families and friends.

Spend your mornings fishing for bass or catfish, rent a jet ski or pontoon boat and explore the lake's coves and islands, or simply relax on a float as you soak up the sun. And make sure to explore nearby towns and enjoy a glass of white or red at a local winery.

Because the area is spread out, there are plenty of options for accommodations. I recommend staying in one of the waterfront cabins or a big townhome, you'll be able to spend your days on the water and head into town in the evening for some delicious seafood and live music.

Claytor Lake

A 21-mile-long reservoir located in southwest Virginia, Claytor Lake is a unique and stunning vacation destination. Originally created in the 1930s as a hydroelectric project, it has now become a popular spot for outdoor recreation and relaxation with Claytor Lake State Park as its centerpiece.

The lake is most famous for its fishing, as the lake is full of bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of water activities such as boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming in the clean and clear water. You'll also find miles of trails with scenic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

While many of the lakes in Virginia are ultra busy with boat traffic and crowds, Claytor Lake is spacious enough to offer peace and quiet, and the cabins and vacation homes set along the lakefront give you a true sense of peace.

Best Accommodation at Claytor Lake

  • Log Cabin Escape - Overlooking Claytor Lake, this cabin is perfect for a romantic getaway. It has a warm and inviting interior living space, a fireplace near the water, and air conditioning, so it's great all year round.

The jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sherando Lake is a hidden gem to tourists, but locals have been enjoying its beauty for years. Nestled in the George Washington National Forest, the lake has become one of the most recreational areas in Virginia.

The lake has a sandy beach and a designated swimming area for small children and offers fishing and picnic tables. Surrounded by lush forests and mountain views, Sherando Lake is the ultimate summer escape for families.

While many visitors often camp when they visit Sherando Lake, there are also a variety of accommodation options available. From hidden VA cabins in the mountains to cottages with cozy vibes and epic views. This is a great place to stay when you want to keep active and get out in nature but don't want to be right on the water.

Lake Gaston

Nestled on the border of Virginia and North Carolina, Lake Gaston is a go-to spot for a serene lakeside retreat. This picturesque lake, nourished by the waters from Kerr Lake upstream, not only offers a tranquil retreat but also plays a crucial role in providing water to Roanoke Rapids Lake downstream.

With over 350 miles of shoreline and plenty of recreational activities, it's one of the best lakes in VA for a family getaway or a weekend escape with friends. Many come here to cast a reel at the boat ramps and try their luck at catching striped bass, catfish, and crappie. You can also rent a boat or jet ski to explore the lake's hidden coves and enjoy water sports like tubing, wakeboarding, and kayaking.

Whether you're coming from North Carolina or Virginia, you'll find plenty of vacation rentals along the lake. From rustic VA cabin rentals to luxurious lakefront homes, there's a wide range of options to choose from.

Lake Accotink

A less popular but equally beautiful option, Lake Accotink is located in Springfield, Virginia. This lake offers a more serene and peaceful atmosphere compared to the popular areas of Lake Anna and Smith Mountain. It's also a great day trip from D.C being only 30 minutes drive away.

Unlike the other lakes, windsurfing is a huge attraction at Lake Accotink, so if you're an adrenaline junkie, this might be your destination. The lake is also known for its abundance of wildlife and picturesque trails, making it a great spot for nature lovers. The lake has wetlands, forests, and a variety of flora and fauna for little ones to join summer camps to learn more about the environment.

Since the lake is within a park, accommodation options are limited. However, there are some friendly campgrounds with free parking for those who want to experience the great outdoors and stay close to the lake. Others can stay just a little outside the park and still be within a short drive of the lake.

Best Accommodations Nearby Lake Accotink

  • Renovated condo -  Right on the outskirts of the park, this cozy condo is just steps away from nature, with a fully equipped kitchen and charming rustic decor.
  • Huge Holiday Home - Nestled in Springfield, this holiday home sleeps 22, has a guest house, and has plenty of amenities for a large group, including a large deck and hot tub.
  • River Retreat - On a private wooded lot, this new river retreat offers access to DC and Lake Accotink. With a game room and open living area, it’s the best family stay.
