Fraggle Rock is hands down one of my favorite viewpoints on Koh Tao, and it’s super easy to reach. Just a short motorcycle ride from Sairee and a quick 5-minute hike brings you to this massive boulder perched high above the town. From here, you get unbeatable panoramic views of Mae Haad Bay, Sairee Beach, and the iconic Koh Nang Yuan.
On the way up, you’ll pass Exotic Hive, a small restaurant with great views, and the surrounding area, known as “Mek’s Mountain,” is a hotspot for rock climbing and abseiling. But trust me, the real highlight is the epic viewpoint at Fraggle Rock itself. Here’s everything you need to know to do one of Koh Tao’s best hikes!
Fraggle Rock: Overview
To get to Fraggle Rock, you can either start from the main road leading to Hin Wong Bay by turning right onto the side street just opposite the turn-off to Mango Bay, or take that same steep road by motorbike up to Exotic Hive for a shorter hike.
- Hike from Hin Wong Bay Road: 1 km with a 75m elevation gain, taking about 15-20 minutes to reach the top.
- Hike from Exotic Hive: A 300m hike with a 25m elevation gain, taking about 5 minutes from Exotic Hive.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Entrance Fee: 100 THB per person, pay at The Hive (includes access to Fraggle Rock and a nearby bamboo viewpoint).
- Views: Mae Haad Bay, Sairee Beach, and the northern tip of Koh Nang Yuan
How to Get to the Trailhead
Fraggle Rock is easy to access whether you’re on foot or scooter. From Sairee, head up the road toward Hin Wong Bay. As you climb the hill, you’ll pass the turn-off for Mango Bay on your left. Shortly after, look for a narrow concrete road on the right, with a sign for "Exotic Hive".
Continue up this road, either by foot or on scooter for about 700 meters before you reach the Exotic Hive restaurant. This road is mostly sealed but quite steep. I noticed some signs warning riders before the very steep sections to only have one person on the bike, but we managed with two the whole way.
Soon you'll arrive at the Hive restaurant. You'll pay the 100 THB entrance fee at this restaurant then walk through the colorful gates into "Mek's Mountain".
Hiking to Fraggle Rock from Exotic Hive
Once inside the gates of "Mek's Mountain," you'll come across a few great spots for abseiling and rock climbing. Be sure to ask the owners of Hive for more info on climbing routes and rental gear if you're interested.
To hike to Fraggle Rock, you’ll first pass a huge boulder. On the left, there’s a wooden staircase leading up to a viewpoint on a boulder. On AllTrails, this is marked as the end point of the Fraggle Rock route, but it’s not actually Fraggle Rock. Still, this bamboo platform offers a fantastic view over Sairee with glimpses of Hin Wong Bay, so it's worth climbing up and having a look.
For sunset, though, you’ll want to continue on to Fraggle Rock. Keep hiking and turn right into the forest. Some sections on the concrete path can be slippery due to moss, but there are ropes tied to the trees to help you up—it’s not difficult by any means.
Soon, you'll reach the iconic "rabbit ears" rock formation that is Fraggle Rock. Walk through the gap between the boulders, and you’ll find yourself on a massive rock platform with some of the best panoramic views on Koh Tao!
My Experience at Fraggle Rock For Sunset
I arrived at Fraggle Rock on a perfectly clear day, and the views were incredible. From the top, we could see all of Sairee Beach and as far as Mae Haad, with the huge double boulders behind Tanote Peak and West Coast Viewpoint visible in the distance.
I could also spot the southern tip of Koh Nang Yuan and its famous viewpoint hill, which makes for an amazing backdrop as the sun starts to set.
In my opinion, Fraggle Rock is the best bang-for-buck sunset spot on Koh Tao! I even climbed some of the larger rocks behind the main viewpoint, though the biggest one looked like it would need ropes (I noticed there were anchors set up for rock climbing, so you can actually climb at Fraggle Rock too).
The views were just as stunning from up there, and surprisingly, we had the entire spot to ourselves even during the busy season.
We stayed until sunset, soaking in the golden views, and then hiked back down to drive into town for dinner at Noodle Island.
Tip: There are no lights along the trail so I recommend bringing a torch or enough phone battery (even after the sunset timelapse!).
Where to Stay in Koh Tao
If you're wondering where to stay on Koh Tao Island and you want to be close to the main activities and beaches, pick a stay near Sairee Beach.
However, other great options include Mae Haad, or for a more secluded vibe, check out the southern beaches or even the east coast around Tanote Bay. Below are my top picks.
1. Jamahkiri Resort & Spa Luxury
A great bang-for-buck luxury dive resort at the beachfront of Shark Bay in a quiet and secluded location away from the hustle and bustle.
2. Phandara Pool Villas Mid-Range
A luxury villa option for those who want their own kitchen & pool. Located on the hill up to Wooden Rock Viewpoint.
3. Summer Guesthouse Budget
Located within walking distance of the dive shops and pub crawls on Sairee Beach, this is the top-budget hostel option with a great vibe.
I hope this guide to hiking Fraggle Rock on Koh Tao has helped you plan a visit to one of the best sunset spots on the island!
